Every episode of Haruka (thus far) has begun in a very formulaic fashion: a Fujihime voiceover that explains the basics, like so.
In a distant time, there existed a scared place protected by the four gods - the peaceful captial of Kyou. Seiryuu of the East, Suzaku of the South, Byakko of the West, and Genbu of the North - when these four gods were stolen away, the Priestess of the Dragon God, destined to save Kyou from peril, appeared.
And with her the Hachiyou that take the Dragon Jewel within themselves, and guard her...
The meat of the episode begins with the Oni Clan having a ceremony as the moon fades away in a lunar eclipse. Masked Akuram (the Oni leader - his followers call him oyakata-sama and so, often, do I) officially kicks off the plot of this show by sealing off the four gods of the directions, breaking the kekkai on the city of Kyou, which makes it vulnerable to their attacks. The moon is fully obscured, and it's time for the next part of the ceremony to begin...
But meanwhile, in modern day Japan, three friends meet on their way to the first day of a new school year. Akane (our heroine) and Tenma (who resembles Kyo from Fruits Basket in almost every possible way) are off to high school, leaving blond-haired, blue-eyed Shimon in junior high. The older pair reassure Shimon about being on his own at school.
Meanwhile, back at the ceremony, Oyakata-sama takes the Dragon Jewel, (which was stolen from Kyou at some earlier point,) and calls out to the Ryuujin no Miko - Akane.
At which point things start to go crazy. Akane hears a voice (Oyakata-sama's voice) calling her, and walks in a daze to an ancient well on the grounds of a temple. Akuram sees that Akane is almost in his grasp, and a shadowy version of himself springs up out of the well amid a storm of magical wind to grab her.
But let's not forget about Tenma and Shimon! Tenma jumps onto the wellcurb and pulls Akane out of the arms of the Akuram-shadow (which does not make Oyakata-sama very happy). Tenma tells Shimon to take Akane (who is still in a daze) and run, just before the Akuram-shadow snakes out an arm to grab Tenma's head (in what seems to be an attempt to drag Tenma into the well).
Just as Shimon moves to drag Akane away, an apparition of the Dragon God emerges from the well and sweeps Akane out of Shimon's grasp. The dragon ends up pulling all three kids into the well.
Akane comes to in a dark void full of drifting sakura petals. The Dragon Jewel floats before her, and in a beautifully animated sequence it splits into seven parts and enters her body. The sakura petals morph into snowflakes, then red maple leaves, the green summer leaves, and back into sakura (signifying that she is going back in time!) A deep, appropriately god-like voice says to her, "I have crossed over time, and have seen the hope for the future which you shall gather. I entrust you with the Dragon Jewel."
A hagoromo (feathered robe of a tennyo, see Ayashi no Ceres) appears around Akane, and she drifts into a canopy of blooming cherry trees, where a glowing (nondescript) male figure (who nontheless manages to look like Tenma) helps her to the ground. Welcome to the turn of the last millenium, Akane. You're in Heian.
Meanwhile, in much less poetic imagery, Akane falls to Kyou in a beam of light...
And awakes in the home of the of the Minister of the Left (one of the most powerful government positions in Heian times). |

Akane interrupts a conversation between Fujihime (the daughter of the Minister of the Right) and Tomomasa, a general of the Imperial guard. Akane doesn't know it, but she's being rather rude to an important little lady, asking questions like 'where are your parents?' and Fujihime seems taken aback by Akane's behavior. Tomomasa takes charge of the situation and addresses Akane with uncharacteristic coldness.
After fleeing Tomomasa's scrutiny, Akane scares a couple of Fujihime's handmaids with her strange appearance (cultivated women in Heian times were very sensitive about that sort of thing). And when she runs into the stone-faced warrior Yorihisa on the grounds of the estate, all the commotion doesn't make him more willing to help her. In fact, it achieves the opposite effect.
Fujihime, Tomomasa and Yorihisa look on in suprise as the terrified Akane vanishes in a corona of light. Fujihime requests that Tomomasa and Yorihisa find the vanished visitor, sure that she is the awaited miko.
Akane is running blindly... until she trips, that is. She notices that she is on a broad, walled avenue that stretches unyeilding as far as the eye can see. She checks her cell phone (nice touch, huh?) and bursts into tears at the sight of the 'out of service' symbol. She is all alone in a strange land.
In Akane's moment of greatest need, an ox carriage (standard transportation for the upper class in this period) emerges from the smokey mist... wait, that wasn't there before... And Akuram emerges from the curtained shadows, looking a little less sinister than he did before. (Gone are the crimson fingernails, the spiderweb pattern on his robes, and the weird goat-shawl-thingey... but the mask has to stay.) And with outstretched hand, he says:
龍神の神子、いざ我が元へ。 Come to me, Ryuujin no Miko.
Akane cautiously obeys, and is almost touching his hand (and Oyakata-sama grins with satisfaction) when she stops short and asks Akuram what is going on. He explains that she is the one person who can embody the power of the gods. He pulls Akane into the carriage with him, and looking into her eyes (as much as is possible, wearing that mask) says "Leave everything to me". And that was, appearantly, the perfect thing to say. Akane cries in his arms as the carriage curtains close around them.
Oyakata-sama and Akane have a nice conversation, believe it or not. Akuram tells her that his people are hated by the people of Kyou because they are different in custom and appearance. Which reminds Akane that Tenma and Shimon might be out there somewhere facing the same problems she had been, and jumps out of Akuram's carriage into the gathering dawn.
Shimon awakes that morning in the middle of a crowd of peasants in a poor section of Kyou. Shimon asks if there is another girl around, to which the peasants respond accusingly, "So you brought allies?" They think he is an Oni because of the color of his hair and eyes.
Then Yorihisa appears out of nowhere to save Shimon from a rather sharp-looking hoe (the garden tool, you know). To Shimon's thanks, Yorihisa replys, "I merely thought you were someone else." However, Shimon overhears Yorihisa reporting the mistake to Tomomasa (who is in an ox carriage) and volunteers to help them in their search for the strange girl.
At about that time, Akane enters the same section of the city, wondering apprehensively if Tenma and Shimon are somewhere nearby. "Somebody, lend me your strength, even a little! Please!" she prays. And are her prayers ever going to be answered. She doesn't realize it, but an energy in the ground reacts to her presence.
Back with the search team, Tomomasa has noticed that something is amiss, spots Akane, and then heads out for a little shameless flirting. He approaches Akane, saying, "You seem to be searching for something, even though there are people waiting for you." She asks if he knows Shimon and Tenma, and he answers, "I mean me." Tomomasa pulls her into an embrace, and things get a little crazy again.
Akane freaks out at Tomomasa's brazen advances, and her Ryuujin powers start enteracting dangerously with a dragon vein, a sort of subterrainian ley line of energy, triggering an earthquake.
(Pause for scenes of Hachiyou yet to be revealed reacting to the quake - Inori saves a little boy from a falling rock, Takamichi is level-headed and hard-working as always, Eisen looks upset and pauses in his flute playing, Yasuaki tips us off about the dragon vein thing.)
Tomomasa fears that Akane's powers will consume her. Yorihisa replies, "Then I should cut that power off, correct?" He draws his sword (looking very cool) but this only causes Akane to freak out more, causing a whirlwind to errupt around her. Fortunately, Shimon manages to fight his way though the whirlwind of energy to give her a BIG hug and calm her down a little bit. Akane touches the back of his hand, and a little jewel appears there. Shimon's dragon jewel.
Suddenly, the dragon vein is visible (I don't know why...) and Yorihisa makes his move. Akane is terrified when he brings his sword down right in front of her, but it doesn't quite break the flow of energy. Akane apologizes to Shimon for getting him involved, because everyone who gets near her is hurt, and she begs... someone to stop this. The tear she sheds becomes Yorihisa's dragon jewel, and with the power of the Ryuujin he severs the dragon vein in a flash of blue light.
Things are calm again, and Tomomasa bids Yorihisa carry Akane back to Fujihime's place. Tears gather beneath Akane's closed eyes as she asks, "Tenma-kun... where are you?"
Where indeed? |
